How to Find Funding for 3D Printers for Schools and Universities

3D Printing

Equipment Trust Fund

The Higher Education Equipment Trust Fund (ETF) was established by the General Assembly of Virginia to meet a need for new equipment for instruction and research in Virginia institutions of higher education. The State Council of Higher Education (SCHEV) and the Virginia College Building Authority (VCBA) administer the ETF Program. Funds can be used to purchase 3D printers. Recipients are obligated to meet certain legal requirements associated with this fund, as established by SCHEV and VCBA. The Office of Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) and UVA Fixed Assets Accounting coordinate all ETF-related activity.

Perkins V Fund

Each year under Perkins V, Congress appropriates roughly $1.1 billion in State formula grants and over $26 million dollars in competitive discretionary grants specified in the law for the improvement of career and technical education programs across the nation. In addition, the Department occasionally uses National Activity funds to award grants for specialized purposes. Instructors can use this funding to purchase 3D printers for technical and career-orientation programs.

What can Carl Perkins funds be used for?

  • Equipment, instructional materials, and tangible resources such as 3D printers and 3D scanners.
  • Software licenses: Perkins Grant funding can support the purchase of CTE-related software licenses, such as eLearning platforms, technical programs, and more.
  • Field trips and student groups.
  • Work-based learning programs.
  • Career guidance and placement programs.
  • Professional development and training for teachers.

Educational Contracts

3D Herndon supports programs in hundreds of schools and libraries throughout Virginia, Maryland, Washington DC and beyond. We have 3D printers, solutions, service contracts and multi-year, system-wide contracts in prominent school districts throughout the region.

We are proud to have educational contracts across Virginia. If you are at a Virginia school, your district may be able to use 3D Herndon’s existing educational contracts with counties like Newport News or Fairfax.

Training for Educators

3D Printing

We understand the opportunities and challenges facing teachers who want to integrate 3D printing into their classrooms. We offer professional programs for educators at all levels – elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, universities, and other education centers. We also offer services to teachers and school districts that make it possible for teachers to focus their time on teaching interesting lessons to their students rather than fixing 3D printers.

3D printing is also proving to be a big winner for libraries in the battle to attract a wider and more diverse audience than ever before. Libraries are beginning to offer inspiring hands-on learning experiences for their communities and 3D design and printing is one of the most important dimensions to this new format. For library administrators, these developments bring inspiring opportunities as well as operational challenges. We can guide you through the process and help you get it right.
